Is it necessary to write “Copyright ©”?

The reason for using “Copyright ©” is now redundant, but most sites still do it out of habit, akin to the way newspaper writers still put 30 at the end of a story.

The orginal reason for doing it this way is that not all browsers could display special characters codes, so instead of © they would display © or © . By placing “Copyright” before the symbol, all browsers would safely display the copyright statement.
