GIF

The Graphic Interchange Format is a proprietary image format developed in 1987 by Unisys, and originally used by CompuServe to send graphics over slow modems. With the advent of the Web, the GIF has become one of the de facto standard for online images (the others are JPEGs and the less supported PNG). There are two version of the GIF: 87a and 89a. The latter allows for the creation of simple animations. Generally pronounced [gif, with a hard G].
