Browser Wars

A euphemistic term used to describe the competition between, primarily Netscape and Microsoft, to be have the dominant Web browser. At its low points, each company introduced proprietary standards that would only work in its browser (e.g., <marquee> and <layer>). The “war” reached its peak in 1997 as both dominant browser-makers released a 4.0 version. Due to a variety of somewhat contentious reasons, the “war” ended by 2000 or so, and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer won. In 2004, however, the Mozilla Foundation released its Firefox browser which seems to have reignited the war by capturing nearly 10 per cent of the market after six-months. The release of Apple’s Safari browser and an improved Opera browser, in combination with Firefox’s release forced Mircorsoft to substantially update its own browser for the first time in almost five years.
