ARPANET
The network setup in 1969 by the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency under J.C.R Licklider and Bob Taylor. Contrary to popular belief, it was built to share computer resources for scientific research in the U.S. The misconception arose from research a scientist name Paul Baran was doing at the time on how to build a network that would be operable in the event of a nuclear attack.
