CanWest’s editorials; hip iMacs; dull newscasts
A whole bunch of media stories caught my eye today.
Keeping with the Canadian tradition of disparaging anyone who gets too big, we get rid of one media baron, only to pillory another. (I’m just as guilty.)
Nevertheless, today’s acerbic column by the always grouchy Peter Worthington was all about how the Asper’s fired him. Another in the Globe explains why the media is so upset with CanWest Global’s decision to force its newspapers to carry editorials dictated from the head office.
For the flip-side of all these ethical arguments its worth reading two stories in The New York Times:
- one explains how Steve Jobs landed his new iMac on the cover of Time
- the other looks into how the big U.S. broadcasters are desperately trying to attract younger viewers to their news shows.
None of the articles paint a pretty picture of the journalism business, so I suggest you think of other things.
