Flash stats
Some stats on the popularity of the different multimedia players as of September 2001 (caveat emptor: the study was commissioned by Macromedia—the makers of Flash and Shockwave):
- 97 percent had Flash (surprised how high the install base was)
- 89 percent had Java (The Counter statistics from the same period were similar, with 86 percent having Java enabled)
- 72 percent had Acrobat Reader
- 69 percent had Shockwave
- 68 percent had Windows Media
- 50 percent had Real Player (would have pegged this one much higher)
- 38 percent had QuickTime Player
- 7 percent had Adobe's SVG Viewer
These are all based on U.S. numbers, but—judging by the Canadian vs. U.S. Flash install base—they should hold true for Canadian Web browsers.
The Counter’s statistics indicate that about 11 percent of the browsers were not JavaScript enabled. Those same stats had only 4 percent of users with 8-bit colour, and 5 percent looking at the Web at a 640 by 480 resolution (53 percent were using 800 by 600; 38 percent used 1024 by 768 or higher).
